A small community for a big beginning.
Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone. At Highlands Micro School, an independent K–5 school in Northwest Denver, children join a close-knit community where teachers know their strengths, support their needs, and make room for their curiosity.
A Typical Kindergarten Day
Our school day runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., with drop-off beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Literacy and math typically take place through small-group rotations, with writing woven throughout the curriculum.
During Investigation, our integrated science and humanities unit, students explore one essential idea through connected learning experiences.
Children also have time to play, create, and recharge. The day includes a morning snack and recess period of approximately 25–30 minutes and a lunch period of about 50 minutes. During recess, children can explore the playground, dig in the dirt pit, or enjoy creative time in our art studio.
After lunch, a brief quiet activity time helps children decompress and prepare for afternoon learning.

Growing as Readers
Our teachers are Orton-Gillingham certified, and flexible small-group instruction allows them to respond to each child’s developing literacy skills. Groups change with students’ needs, giving children support and challenge as they grow.
Each student has a computer for supplemental online learning programs. These tools complement teacher-led instruction, while our extensive library invites children to explore books, discover their interests, and develop a love of reading.
A Five-Year-Old in a Mixed-Age Crew
Kindergarten students belong to our Kindergarten–2nd grade crew. Learning groups are often organized around students’ skills and needs rather than age alone, allowing teachers to meet children where they are.
At other times, we intentionally partner younger and older learners. Older students practice leadership and compassion, while younger children build confidence through working alongside more experienced peers. Each child has opportunities to contribute, form friendships, and feel part of the crew.

After-School Play and Enrichment
Our Life Skills Block (LSB) offers after-school care from 3–6 p.m. on school days, including for Kindergarten students.
LSB provides a more independent, play-based afternoon where children can follow their interests and spend time with friends. Monday through Thursday, families can also choose additional, more structured enrichment classes, with offerings such as pottery, STEAM, and sports.
Come Meet the Crew
A school-day tour is an opportunity to see our learning spaces, ask questions, and explore whether Micro could be a good fit for your child.
