Highlands Micro School offers several enrichment classes which are scheduled throughout the week.
They include:
Art: Lindsay is leading our art enrichment this year and shares her joy of creativity with our students through a weekly, 1 hour art class in our renovated art studio space. She uses a wide variety of mediums, from paint to watercolor to clay. Teaching art in elementary schools enhances creativity and critical thinking, allowing students to express themselves visually while developing important problem-solving skills and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts. Additionally, it can improve fine motor skills and boost self-confidence as children see their artistic abilities evolve.
Physical Education: Along with being our expert 3-5 general education teacher, Jaime also brings her previous experience of teaching P.E. to our crew. She takes each crew out separately once a week to a local park for an hour long session of a wide variety of physical tasks that provide cognitive content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for physical activity and physical fitness. Needless to say, our P.E. enrichment is a big hit with the crew!
Yoga: Jaime is also a trained yoga instructor who brings yoga and movement into the classroom once a week for the 3-5 crew. Yoga is usually enjoyed outside in our peaceful front yard, but also works in the spacious modular upper classroom during the colder months. A growing body of research has already shown that yoga can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children.
Music: Han brings her musical talent in a one hour class to our crews this year and the students love it! Teaching music to elementary students offers a myriad of benefits. It enhances cognitive development by improving memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills as well as fosters emotional and social growth by encouraging teamwork, self-expression, and empathy. Music education boosts creativity and self-esteem, providing a well-rounded foundation that can positively influence academic performance and lifelong appreciation for the arts.
